Ancient Greek Wrestling
Earliest Forms of Greek Wrestling
The first known match of Ancient Greek Wrestling occurred in the year 708 B.C. Just as today there were many forms of the sport including two styles in the ancient Olympic games with their own separate set of rules.
The first form in the Olympic games was called Kato Pale which was primarily a ground fighting style. A point was scored when one of the combatant’s back touched the ground. You could also score points by making your opponent tap out from a submission hold or by forcing them off of the competition area. Victory came by scoring three points. Any combination of the three ways to score was valid and would win the match.
The second style in the ancient games was called Orthia Pale. This style focused on the takedown. The way to win a match was to be the first to score three separate takedowns. The first competitor to do so won the match.
There were only two divisions in the ancient games, men & boys and there were no weight classes.
