Half Guard: Figure Four Escape
The Lockdown can be a very hard guard to pass. Not only that but you can suffer damage to your knee if you do not first defend the Lockdown before trying to pass your opponent's guard.
The Figure Four pass is one of the ways that I use to defend against the Lockdown before passing my opponent's guard.
In the pictures below I've done my best to show and explain what I am doing with my legs in order to get my leg free.
Here I am stuck in my opponent's Half Guard because he has the Lockdown on my right leg.
The first thing you do is lift your right foot up in the air which will free it from the lockdown. As you do this your left foot hooks under your opponent's left ankle.
Then you swim your right leg under your left foot which is trapping your opponent's left leg.
Then you figure four your legs to finish the escape from the lockdown. Now you can work on passing the guard.
From this angle you can see I am stuck in my opponent's lockdown.
First you lift your right leg and hook your left foot under your opponent's left ankle.
Next you pummel your right leg under your left leg and your opponent's left leg at the same time.
You finish with the figure four. Now you can set up to pass your opponent's guard without risk to your knee.
