Mastering the Twister

Mastering the Twister

Click Here to pick this book up !

Mastering the Twister for Mixed Martial Arts Competition follows the same winning formula as Eddie's first book with Victory Belt MTRG. The cover is very much the same except the color on the planet graphic is red intead of the classic 10th Planet blue.

This book like MTRG has an in depth flow chart for the techniques. It outlines the transitions from one position to the other positions available. This is not something that you just glance over quickly and then you have it. This is something that you have to study in order to take it all in and understand.

Next comes the table of context which lays it all out there for you. It's broken down into six major sections and then a few of the major sections are broken down into sub sections and then techniques.

Conceptually, naming the techniques is genius because when I want to look up the Hog Tie it is a lot easier to find then if the tech was called Twister set up #9. Naming the techs is also because when I say Hog Tie you will know what series of moves I am talking about. Otherwise I would have to say "you know that one Twister set up from Twister Side Control where you force the guy into the Twister by... "

The foreward by one of Eddie's top students Jason Chambers is cool. He outlines the rise and fall of BJJ in MMA and how Eddie recognized that new setups were needed to land techniques no-gi. Enter the Rubber Guard.

Jason talks about the difference between training at a school "And instead of focusing on principles that were fully adapted to MMA, the classes focused on gi techniques that translated loosely to no-gi."

The Acknowledgements by Eddie is a very revealing piece that goes down deep into who he is and where he came from. This is a very candid look into Eddie Bravo. There is way too much to cover here. Just pick up the book so that you can read it for yourself.

Now we get to the Introduction which details how Eddie came to learn and adapt the Twister for BJJ.

After that, Part One: Twister Side Control. Here Eddie breaks down the major components like establishing Twister Side Control, the Grapevine and the Twister Roll. The he goes into a number of ways to setup the Twister from Twister Side Control.

A lot of the techniques have 3 pics per move. So many pics that it is a little confusing at times. Instead of not enough pictures that make you say "how did he get there ?" Mastering the Twister at times has too many pics.

At the end of this section Eddie goes over a number of submissions from Twister Side Control.

The next major section of the book is The Truck. This is an unnorthodox position that Eddie discovered while rolling for the Twister. It just so happens that there are a number of submissions here which Eddie goes over. He also covers how to get the Twister from the Truck.

The Monkey Mount is next. Again Eddie goes into detail about what his thought process was in creating this mount style. These explanations are great because they will help you understand the principles behind the positions and techniques. Understanding the principles will help you incorporate the techs into your game.

There are a number of submissions and transitions in this section for you to work on. Including the Loco Plata made famous by Shinya Aioki in MMA competition.

Part four is The Back. There is a really cool transition from the Back to Spider Web called the Back Widow that you should look out for.

The Sprawl section of the book goes over a number of submissions from the sprawl. Including the Peruvian Necktie that CB Dolloway demonstrated on the Ultimate Fighter.

The last section of the book is Transitioning to the Twister. Here Eddie goes over a number of situations from where you can land the Twister.

Mastering the Twister completes the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system for now. This is required reading for anyone that wants to learn the system.

In the upcoming years as more people learn how effective the Twister can be we may see it more and more in MMA.

At this point it has been banned from most BJJ and grappling tournaments including ADCC. Mastering the Twister is still a must have if you compete BJJ becuase there are so many techniques and submissions that you can use.
