North South Techniques
The North South position is a rarely used in MMA and grappling competitions. In my opinion it is a very dangerous position. There are a few excellent submissions here.
The way that you control your opponent from this position is a little different no-gi. In BJJ it is common to have both arms past your opponent's arms, grabbing their gi near the waist with your arms tight to their side and your elbows in their armpits.
This way of controlling your opponent is less effective without a gi because of the loss of grips.
The best way to control your opponent from this position is to use Head & Arm control. One arm goes under your opponents arm and the other goes under their neck. The Ball & Socket and Gable grips seem to work best here.
Once you have H & A control it is important to keep your hips down. Your opponents may try to bring their legs up and over to get a hook in and escape or worse take your back. So keep your hips down and squeeze the H & A control to settle them down.
You also want to angle your body off at a 30 degree angle with your legs apart for base. If you stay in a straight line with your opponent they may be able to roll you over and get the top position.
