Rubber Guard: Crack Head Triangle

The Crack Head Triangle is a technique that I started working on at 10th Planet. Basically, it is another triangle set up from the Rubber Guard.

The technique starts from Modified Retard Control. Instead of a Gable Grip on the leg that is over the opponents shoulders both hands are holding the ankle. I found this to be a stronger grip and it allows you to transition quickly.

From Modified Retard Control you go to Crack Head Control. Either your opponent will allow you to keep his posture broken down which makes it quick and easy to land the Triangle or they will posture up.

The setup is the same either way.

Crack Head Triangle 1

Jason Mallory starts from the Modified Retard Control with both hands gripping his left ankle and Patrik Bogyo in his Rubber Guard.

Crack Head Triangle 1

Next I bring my right leg up and cross my right foot over my left and do leg curls to lock Patrik's shoulders in place preventing him from backing out of the guard.

Crack Head Triangle 1

Then I switch my right hand from my left ankle to my right and then switch my right foot from the top to the bottom while keeping my left hand on my left ankle. The reason that I switch the grips is so that my right hand can transition to the back of Patrik's neck to keep his posture broken down when my left leg opens for the triangle.

Crack Head Triangle 1

While maintaining leg curl pressure I let go of my left ankle and grab Patrik's right hand with my left hand. Your right forearm has to be driving into his collar bone with the leg curls to keep everything tight.

Crack Head Triangle 1

Ok, if your opponent allows you to keep his posture broken down then all you have to do is transition your right hand from your right ankle to the back of your opponent's neck, open your left leg and push their right hand through for the triangle. If they posture up like Patrik does here you still transition your right hand to the back of their neck but now you really have to maintain the high guard with leg curls and pull his neck down as hard as possible.

Crack Head Triangle 1

Now Jason opens his left leg, pushes Patrik's right hand through while continuing to pull his head down and doing a leg curl with his right leg to help control Patrik's posture. You have to have good timing on this step. This is the key to landing the triangle. You may have to drill this step a number of times to get the timing down.

Crack Head Triangle 1

Once Jason's left leg is over Patrik's right shoulder he pulls Patrik's left arm across preparing to lock in the triangle.

Crack Head Triangle 1

With the triangle closed I angle my body off on a 45 degree angle while squeezing my knees together. If you lift your hips at this point the triangle should be tight enough to get the tap. If not....

Crack Head Triangle 1

Put a Gable Grip behind his head, squeeze your knees together and lift your hips to finish the submission.

The Mission Triangle is another Triangle setup from the Rubber Guard that can be used in combination with the Crackhead Triangle. Check it out and put the one two punch together.
