Wrestling for Fighting by Randy Couture is probably one of the best manuals on the market. There are three major sections to the book. The first section covers Freestyle, the second Greco and the third put it all together for fighting.
The First section covers the basics of Freestyle. Randy starts off with the stance and goes over moving in the stance, level changes, distance and setups. He also explains various tie ups, wrist control as well as overhooks and underhooks.
Next Randy goes over the four basic takedowns. He also demonstrates how to sprawl and defenses for the single leg takedown.
The next major section of the book is Greco. Here Randy introduces basic pummeling which leads into arm drags, body locks and headlocks.
This is the section that most readily transfers to Mixed Martial Arts competition. You will need to make some adjustments to make the techniques work. With that being said the upper body clinching of Greco will not allow your opponent the space that they need in order to strike at the same time giving you the opportunity to take them down.
In the last section
of the book Randy puts it all together in the fighting section. Here Randy shows how to close the distance with strikes in order to setup takedowns and get into the clinch. In this section he also talks about cage tactics and how the cage can be used as a weapon in the Octagon.
The ground fighting portion of this section is limited to a handful of highly effective techniques that Randy personally uses in his fights.
There are only two submissions in the book which actually makes sense because submissions are not really within the realm of Freestyle or Greco. Randy actually mentions this and suggests getting with a qualified Jiu Jitsu instructor or getting one of the many great books on the subject.
This book will give you plenty of material to work on in order to incorporate more wrestling into your gameplan. By first focusing on solid techniques you will have a great base to work from as you add striking to the mix.
As is customary with Victory Belt books there is a great intro where Randy tells how he got into the sport and how it just wouldn’t leave him alone. He also tells of his four attempts at making the US Olympic team. His perseverance really impressed me.
Randy Couture is a true champion and should be proud of the quality book that he and Victory Book have put together in Wrestling for Fighting: The Natural Way .
