UFC President Dana White announced leading up to the fight that the winner between top contenders Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard would get the next title shot in the lightweight division. Maynard pulled out a smart win over Florian to secure his first title shot which will come against UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar who defeated BJ Penn for the second consecutive time to secure his legit claim to the throne.
Gray said that he feels that he has beaten all of the top lightweights and that he deserves a shot at the title. This fight will actually be a rematch between Edgar and Maynard with Frankie having a chance to avenge his loss to Gray in their previous meeting.
