Half Guard: Kimura Defense
The Kimura Defense from the Half Guard is a good way to defend the Kimura or Double Wrist Lock.
Many times when you have your opponent in the Lockdown they will try to Kimura your arm if you do not get the an underhook or overhook fast enough.
You can do this technique from the Figure 4 HG or when your opponent has you in Twister Side Control as well. Basically any time that someone tries to Kimura your arm from HG or Side Control.
Here Jason has Patrik in his HG with the Lockdown on. Patrik was able to secure my wrist and he is threatening with a Kimura Shoulder Lock.
Immediately I release the Lockdown, escape my hips and bring my knee up to his forearm. I don't want to give him time to get into position for the Kimura or change the hold into a straight armbar.
I keep his leg hooked with my right foot, or better yet, step over his leg in case he tries to pass my guard.
I break his grip with an outward motion of my knee which puts him into position for ...
A nice Apollo Choke ( arm Triangle ). You should also regain the Lockdown at this point as well. If you are not able to get the choke on your opponent from the HG you can sweep them as Eddie Bravo demonstrates in his first book Jiu-jitsu Unleashed.
This is a nice little defense for the Kimura. When your opponent has locked your wrist you also want to make sure that you keep that shoulder on the mat.
So if they are attacking your right arm you want to keep your right shoulder on the mat. Then you want to do the break quickly.
The worst thing you can do is turn into your opponent after they lock your wrist. If you do this you are giving them the Kimura. So keep your shoulder on the mat.
Once your opponent has your wrist locked time is what they need to get into position for the Kimura. Don't give it to them!
