Rubber Guard: Right Angle

The Right Angle is a technique that I developed to deal with the double under guard pass without a gi.

One day in class at 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Eddie Bravo, Jason Chambers and Einstein were talking about this position ( see step # 3 ) which is a common counter to the double under pass. The problem is that most of the time it becomes a stalemate until the bottom guy lets go of the position.

Eddie was standing there looking at the position and he said “there has to be something there.” That was all that was said and then everybody continued to train.

I thought about the position more after I left class. There had to be more there than just a mad scramble to get back to guard or letting your opponent pass your guard. I developed the Right Angle which is a submission counter to the UnderDog Pass.

Right Angle

Jason Mallory starts in the seated position with Aron Berecz in his open guard.

Right Angle

Aron goes for the underdog pass so I make my legs heavy by dropping them towards the floor opening up space under Aron's armpits.

Right Angle

Immediately I grip Aron's right shoulder before he can close his grip to complete the pass or back away.

Right Angle

Next I bring my right leg up from Aron's left arm to his neck and do a leg curl to help break his posture and hold him in place. This also keeps him from stepping over my right leg in order to pass my guard. As I do this I let go of the vice grip and feed my left ankle to my left hand with my right hand trapping Aron's right shoulder in place.

Right Angle

Then I cross my legs with my right ankle over my left forming a Right Angle. The technique is very quick. Steps 3-5 are almost done at the same time.

Right Angle

Now I can apply the submission by grabbing my right shin with my right hand and then driving my forearm into Aron's neck while pulling him in with leg curls.

Right Angle

Similar to Eddie Bravo’s Invisible Collar this is a submission that works best on bigger guys. Because they have bigger necks you can lock the submission in tighter. If your opponent is smaller or is just a tough guy you can tighten the submission by under hooking your right ankle with your right wrist and then switching your feet so that your left foot is on top of your right foot. This will add a tremendous amount of pressure giving you the submission.

Right Angle

If it is a self defense situation or an mma match I can elbow or hammer fist his head with my right arm or block a strike if he tries to hit me with his left hand. If your opponent is crazy strong like Rampage Jackson and he tries to pick you up make sure that you DO NOT violate jiu jitsu principals, let go of the technique so that you DO NOT GET SLAMMED!

Right Angle

Punch from the Right Angle.

Right Angle

If your opponent tries to punch you...

Right Angle

You can easily block a strike from the Right Angle.
